The "Order Is Paid" campaign fires when Shopify confirms that payment has been received for an order. This is one of the most reliable triggers for post-purchase follow-up, since it only fires for orders where the customer has actually completed payment.
When it triggers
This campaign fires when Shopify marks an order's payment status as paid. This happens immediately for credit card and accelerated checkout payments (Shop Pay, PayPal Express, etc.), and when a manual payment (like bank transfer) is marked as paid by the store owner.
Use cases
- Post-purchase upsell — recommend a complementary product a short time after purchase
- Thank you email — send a personalized thank-you that goes beyond Shopify's standard order confirmation
- Usage instructions — for complex products, send care guides, setup instructions, or tutorials
- Cross-sell campaign — introduce customers to other products in your catalog
Timing recommendations
- For a thank-you or upsell email, a delay of 1–2 hours works well — after the customer has received their confirmation but while the purchase is still fresh
- For product usage or setup guides, consider 1–3 days to give them time to receive the item
Tip: Avoid duplicate order confirmations
Shopify sends its own order confirmation email automatically. If you create an email that replicates the confirmation, consider customizing your message to add something beyond what Shopify already sends — otherwise customers receive two very similar emails.
Combining with other campaigns
Order Is Paid works well as the start of a post-purchase sequence. For example: a thank-you email at 2 hours after payment, followed by a review request (via the Review Request campaign) 10 days after fulfillment.
